American Coalition for Taxpayer Rights Strongly Supports Provision Terminating IRS Direct File

WASHINGTON, DC – The American Coalition for Taxpayer Rights (ACTR), the trade association for the nation’s leading tax preparation and tax software companies and financial institutions that offer tax-time financial products, released the following statement today regarding the Ways and Means tax legislation that would terminate the IRS Direct File project:

“ACTR strongly supports the termination of the IRS Direct File project, which is unnecessary, costly and unauthorized by Congress.  We especially want to thank Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith, as well as Reps. Adrian Smith and Chuck Edwards and other members of the Ways and Means Committee, for their leadership on this issue and for including this important provision in the legislation.  The take-up rate of IRS Direct File by taxpayers has been abysmal, even as the private sector provides millions of tax returns each year at no cost to taxpayers.  We look forward to continuing to work with members of the House and Senate, and the Administration, to provide taxpayers with a wide range of free tax-filing options.”

The American Coalition for Taxpayer Rights (ACTR) was formed in 2011 by the nation’s leading retail tax preparation and tax software companies and financial institutions, which collectively prepare and file more than 120 million of the 155 million federal tax returns annually. ACTR advocates for taxpayer rights and strengthens America’s voluntary tax compliance system.
