ACTR Statement on IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel’s Testimony to the House Ways and Means Committee

The American Coalition for Taxpayer Rights today released the following statement about IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel’s Testimony to the House Ways and Means Committee:

“Today’s hearing underscored that IRS’s Direct File “pilot” is a costly solution to a non-existent problem. Millions of Americans already can — and do — file their taxes for free through the IRS Free File Program, and through tax preparation commercial sites and other programs, making Direct File a resource-heavy and unnecessary program. These companies provide the kind of top-notch customer service that an already overwhelmed IRS cannot offer taxpayers. Moreover, Direct File gives too much power to the IRS, setting the agency up to be tax preparer, tax auditor and tax enforcer.”

The American Coalition for Taxpayer Rights is a 12-member, voluntary coalition of the nation’s leading tax preparation, tax software and financial services settlement companies. Each year, ACTR member companies serve approximately 110 million of the more than 150 million Americans who file federal income tax returns.
